Spring Skin at Risk! How to Handle March Skin Troubles

March marks the transition from winter to spring, a period when the skin adapts to changing environmental conditions, leading to various skin troubles. As the temperature difference between day and night increases, moisture rapidly evaporates from the skin, and the transition from cold to warm air weakens the skin barrier. Additionally, as spring arrives, humidity in the air decreases, making the skin prone to dryness, which can result in rough texture, the accumulation of dead skin cells, and reduced elasticity.

During this period, external environmental factors such as yellow dust, fine dust, and pollen can directly irritate the skin, clog pores, and become major causes of skin troubles. Fine dust and yellow dust settle as microscopic particles on the skin’s surface, triggering inflammatory reactions, while pollen can cause allergic responses, increasing itching and redness. These factors weaken the skin’s immune system, increasing the frequency of breakouts and causing more significant effects on individuals with sensitive skin.

Additionally, seasonal changes can lead to hormonal fluctuations, resulting in an increase in sebum production, which disrupts the skin’s oil-moisture balance. This can cause the skin to appear greasy, leading to blackheads, whiteheads, and small acne breakouts. Those with naturally dry skin may experience severe dryness, while individuals with oily skin may suffer from excessive sebum production, leading to clogged pores and worsened skin troubles.

Given these environmental and skin condition changes, it is essential to focus on proper hydration, sun protection, cleansing, and soothing care to maintain healthy skin.

1. Dry Air & Sudden Temperature Changes

As winter transitions into spring, the significant temperature difference between day and night causes rapid moisture evaporation from the skin. The skin barrier weakens, leading to a buildup of dead skin cells, rough texture, and possible itching.

2. Yellow Dust, Fine Dust & Pollen

In March, the increased presence of yellow dust, fine dust, and pollen accumulates on the skin’s surface, clogging pores and triggering acne and skin troubles. Additionally, allergic reactions may cause redness, itching, and skin inflammation.

3. Increased Sebum Production

As temperatures rise, the skin’s oil-water balance becomes disrupted, leading to increased sebum production. Excessive sebum can result in blackheads, whiteheads, and small acne breakouts, making the skin appear greasy.

4. Skin Sensitivity Due to Lower Immunity

During seasonal transitions, weakened immunity can make the skin more sensitive. Conditions such as atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis may worsen, and even minor irritants can weaken the skin barrier.

5. Incorrect Skincare Habits

Using heavy winter creams without adjusting to the seasonal change can clog pores and trigger breakouts. Inadequate cleansing leads to the accumulation of impurities, while excessive exfoliation damages the skin’s protective barrier, worsening skin troubles.

Essential Skincare Tips

1. Maintain Proper Hydration

Keeping your skin deeply hydrated is crucial. Use creams or ampoules containing hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and ceramides to strengthen the skin barrier.
If your skin feels extremely dry, use a mist or moisture pads for immediate hydration.

2. Sunscreen is a Must!

Spring UV rays are stronger than in winter, so applying SPF50+ PA++++ sunscreen daily is essential.
If you have sensitive skin, choose a mild physical (mineral) sunscreen. When outdoors, reapply sunscreen every 2–3 hours using a sun cushion or sun stick for optimal protection.

3. Thorough Cleansing & Exfoliation

To prevent fine dust and yellow dust from accumulating on the skin, practice deep cleansing in the evening.
Follow a routine of cleansing oil → mild acidic cleansing foam → toner to effectively remove impurities.
Using AHA/BHA exfoliating products 2–3 times a week helps clear dead skin cells, brighten the complexion, and prevent breakouts.

4. Soothing & Cooling Care

When your skin becomes sensitive and itchy, use skincare products containing Centella Asiatica (Cica), aloe, or green tea to calm irritation.
Applying cooling gel or soothing sheet masks can also help quickly relieve skin sensitivity.

5. Gentle & Hydrating Makeup
Instead of heavy foundation, opt for a hydrating cushion, BB, or CC cream.
Make sure to use non-comedogenic products (non-pore-clogging) to avoid breakouts.
When your skin is sensitive, minimize the use of heavy makeup and focus on a lighter application.

6. Nutrition & Sleep are Important!

Consuming fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins C & E, getting 7–8 hours of quality sleep daily, and drinking 1.5–2L of water helps improve skin regeneration, elasticity, and deep hydration.
